One doesn’t choose accidentallly to represent the famous Commedia Dell’arte character of Pulcinella (Punch, Petrouchka, Polichinelle). Opting for a polyglot speech made of present and past musics from here and there, Pulcinella presents, with a real sense of theatre and comedy, a sound of the metamorphosis, fancy and refined, but still popular. The musicians’ personality, the wide range of sounds, and the instrumental variety lead to an easy-to-identify universe: surprising, baroque, spontaneous and close to the universe of the tales.
The musicians of Pulcinella play their own compositions, melting together several idioms borrowed from the jazz, the rock, but also from the «bal musette», the improvised music, the balkan and latin traditions. The pieces are served by saxophones, accordion, acoustic bass, drums, percussions, metallophone and many other more unexpected instruments (wing flutes, glockenspiel, melodica, bendir, toys, tools, voices…)
Pulcinella is a quartet, but he thinks he’s an orchestra!
Created in December 2004, Pulcinella has already given more than 130 concerts in France and other countries. The band was invited to open the show for Bojan Z, Michel Portal, Renaud Garcia-Fons, Julien Loureau, Akosh S…and has performed in renowned clubs and festivals such as the Casa del Jazz of Rome, St Louis du Senegal Jazz Festival, Pannonica of Nantes, Petit Faucheux of Tours, Grenoble Jazz Festival, Nancy Jazz Pulsation…
From the start, Pulcinella has been collaborating on permanent basis with a graphic designer (Fabrice Ferriès) and a sound engineer (Jacques Masliah). The band also works in many different contexts: cultural and educational actions in schools, encounters with other artists (musicians, singers, dancers, comedians, circus…). This blend of culture feeds Pulcinella. For instance, the group currently presents a Movie-concert, on Buster Keaton’s «3 Ages».
In order to develop its natural tendency for stage-writing, Pulcinella has done a new creation at the «Scène Nationale of Foix», in January 2008, under the experienced eye and direction of Eric Lareine.
FERDINAND DOUMERC
(saxophones, flutes, metallophone, melodica, musical direction)
Born in 1979, fond of pop music as a teenager, he gets a DEM Jazz (diploma after the licence of musicology), then goes to the Conservatory with François Théberge and Pierre de Bethmann; he never has enough of meetings and jam sessions (Guillaume de Chassy, George Clinton, Dave Liebman, Guillaume Orti…); played at the jazz festivals of Marciac, Grenoble, Luz, Toulouse, Reims,… He can be found in latin or pop bands, as well as in big bands and in the multi-media projet «In the Food for Love». He develops his sense of composition with Pulcinella and with his own Quartet.
FREDERIC CAVALLIN
(drums, percussions, glockenspiel, melodica)
Born in 1975, he starts playing at the age of 8, studies at the Agostini Academy and at the Toulouse school Music’Hall. He learned the oriental percussions with Ali Alaoui (solist at the Maroc National Orchestra), and the indian one with Shankar Gos and Debashish Bramacharia. His expression field in the scene : dance, puppets, theater, circus, bands. He collaborated with Joe Doherty, Liliput Orchestra, Gilles Ramade’s company, la Friture Moderne, Tobrogoï, Michèle Mühlemann…. Apart from Pulcinella, he’s currently working with the dancer James Carlès, and with Fama Volat, band of the shows «In the food for love» and «Food sound system».
FLORIAN DEMONSANT
(accordion)
Born in 1982, he was taught by an old accordion master since the age of 8; from 13 to 17, he plays in local dancing bands and orchestras. His own musical personality rose during master classes of improvised music (Joëlle Léandre, Denis Badault…), or at the occasion of encounter in Rumania (with Taraf de Haïdouks’ Marius Manole), or in Sénégal. He has worked with circuses, dance companies, has made a few sound-tracks, and is currently playing with a balkan orchestra (P4), and with the singer Leïla Martial (Le Son du Sourd).
JEAN-MARC SERPIN
(acoustic bass)
Born in 1971, he goes to the Los Angeles Bass Institute of Technology in 1991, where he studies with Gary Willis, Joe Diorio, Scott Henderson, Bob Magnusson… Then he moves to Brasil, and plays with bands and orchestras in Sao Paulo for several years. Back to France in 1998, he goes to the school Music’Halle of Toulouse, switches to acoustic bass and participate in several musical projects (jazz, electronic, hip-hop, salsa, rock). Apart from Pulcinella, he plays with the singer Coco Guimbaud.
