Puerto Muerto is Tim Kelley and Christa Meyer, a husband-and-wife duo that makes strange and beautiful rock music. Tim plays guitar and other stringed instruments; Christa often abuses a small drum kit. Both write songs and sing, Meyer with a startling, classically trained mezzosoprano-to-alto, Kelley with a reedy, evocative baritone. Their influences include Ray Davies, Gustav Mahler, the Clash, Kurt Weill, Dr. Dre, and Günther Grass. Their catalog includes songs about French pirates, tragic foundlings, and dirty Indians. Puerto Muerto has released four full-lengths: Your Bloated Corpse Has Washed Ashore, See You in Hell, Elena (a song cycle about incest, molestation, and infanticide that features a spoken-word recitation by special guest Jon Langford), and Songs of Muerto County (an alternative score to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre). Puerto Muerto has also contributed tracks to various soundtracks and compilations, including Bloodshot Records’ The Executioner’s Last Song, a benefit CD supporting organizations that oppose the death penalty.
