Mahmoud SALAH (b.1960), a daf performer and the artistic director of the mugham ensemble «Ghadim Sharq» (The Ancient Orient), comes from the family of Japhar Jabbarly, a great Azerbaijani play writer, one of the founders of Azerbaijan Soviet theatre and cinema.
At the age of sixteen Mahmoud Salah started his professional musical activity performing with the Ensemble of national musical instruments of the Azerbaijan State TV and Radio Company. Today he is considered the best daf performer in Azerbaijan. He teaches daf performing to traditional singers (khanendes) at the Azerbaijan National Conservatoire and at the Azerbaijan State Institute of Arts. Inna Naroditskaya, professor of the Northwestern University (Illinois, USA) in her book «Songs from the Land of Fire» (2003) expresses her gratitude to Mahmoud Salah for teaching her to play the gaval and included a track with his performance into the compact disks with recordings of Azerbaijani musicians added to this book.
Mahmoud Salah performed with renowned Azerbaijani traditional musicians - singers and instrumentalists. In 1987 he performed with Alim Gasimov at the International Festival in Samarqand where their group was awarded the first prize. In the 90-ies for the series «Anthology of Azebaijani traditional music» released in France he recorded a few CDs in ensemble with khanendes Agakhan Abdullayev, Janali Akberov, Melek khanim Ayyubova, Gandab Guliyeva. His performance in ensemble with excellent Azerbaijani instrumentalists Malik Mansourov and Aydin Aliyev was also recorded on the CDs released under Buda Musique in 1997 in France [‘Azerbaidjan: Le Tar de Malik Mansurov’, Musique du Monde, 1997, CD 92696-2, BUDA Musique, Paris, France/ ‘Azerbaidjan: Le Garmon de Aydin Aliev’, Musique du Monde, 1997, CD 92701-2, BUDA Musique, Paris, France]. A few CDs with his performance were released by Turkish companies RAKS (with khanende Sakine Ismailova, 2003) and «Boyuk Shahinler» (solo performance, 2005). Mahmoud Salah is also known as a reformer of tar, a national string instrument. In 2002 Turkish TRT-2, in 2004 an Azerbaijani private channel «Leader», and in 2005 the Azerbaijan State TV & Radio company took a few documentaries of his art, and this tar.
