It’s in the sun-warmed city of Austin, Texas that The Story Of creates their energetic brand of uplifting songs. They call it ‘panoramic music’ and it boasts a wall of eclectic melodies and instrumentation. The band employs the sounds of everything from pianos and vibraphones, to child choirs and synthesizers. The staple behind their sound, however, is a rock guitar and a moving lyric.
The band recently finished tying the bow on their latest full-length record, «Until The Autumn» (Self Release / Leroy Godspeed Records) This album was birthed in a cabin on the banks of the Colorado River just outside of Austin that they called ‘Fish Camp’. The band turned the rustic living quarters into a studio, slept on its floors and immersed themselves in the surroundings. What came out of the effort was an organic ‘Beatles-esc’ album. The Story Of and their ‘Fish Camp’ were featured on MTV2 and Time Warner on Demand in December, 2008. (video segment links below) The band will be on heading out on tour this summer (central / west coast) to support their new record.
‘The Austinist’ writes this about the band, «Their sound is expansive, almost to the brink of epic, and the song writing is accessible in a way that defines fall weather; colorful and different». In the ‘live music capital of the world’, The Story Of has gained a reputation for their captivating live performances and DIY mentality. Their music has been written, recorded, published and promoted by themselves under the banner of Leroy Godspeed Records. They have had songs placed with MTV, MTV2, NBC, PBS, New Belgium Brewery, a variety of films [including the award winning documentary «Light in Liquid» and «Ex-Terminators» on Touchstone Pictures]. Their last record, «The World’s Affair», released in fall 2007, was embraced on independent and college radio and received top adds in CMJ magazine in October 2007.
The five members of The Story Of are all natives to the Appalachia region and originally formed in Athens, Ohio six winters ago. It wasn’t until 2004 that they decided to leave the foothills of Americana and move their collective southwest to Austin. The band still pulls inspiration from their northern roots and you can hear this influence laced in their song writing.
