Avicii was born on 8 September 1989 in Stockholm, Sweden. His birth name is Tim Bergling, while he is known professionally as both Avicii and Tim Berg. Explaining his "Avicii" moniker, Berg states,
"Avici is kind of like Dante's Inferno ... it's the lowest level of hell in Buddhism. A friend of mine told me about it, and it stuck in my head. I was going to make up a name for my MySpace page for the first time, and I just kind of went for it. I tried a couple of other [names] before, but they were all taken (laughing). I kind of ended up with Avicii, and then I got really attached to it."

He started out in 2008, when he was 18 years old, doing a bedroom remix of the theme tune to the Commodore 64 game, "Lazy Jones". This led to his first release on Strike Recordings, "Lazy Lace". Berg became captivated and spent almost every waking hour in his studio creating remixes. He has a distinctive style, producing music using a broad range of sounds, rather than remaining focused on one particular genre.
In 2010, he released a collaboration with John Dahlbäck called "Don't Hold Back". He is additionally working on projects Tiësto and Sebastian Ingrosso. While his work is primarily electronic synthetic tracks, EMI is set to release a vocal version of the track, "Seek Bromance".
In October 2010, he signed with the European A&R team with EMI Music Publishing, which is the largest music publisher in the world. Based in London and New York City, EMI is the fourth-largest business group and family of record labels in the recording industry, making it one of the "big four" record companies and a member of the RIAA.
